Fill blank information when finding customer

I had a customer come in by appointment that I could not find right away (his name was in as Jim, not James). I went to make him a profile, entered his phone and email, and Drive then found him with his email. I selected the customer, yet the phone number I got from him, and entered when searching him, was not transferred to the profile. Admittedly I should have verified his contact info before allowing him to leave, but I remembered asking him his contact information, entering it, and assumed it was then on his profile. How I am hoping this guy answers my email so I can make this deal happen.

Quick follow-up: when Drive found the existing customer by email, did you select/merge into that profile from the search results, or did it open a new profile? And if you remember, was the phone number field already populated with something else at that point? Any extra details like that will help us reproduce what you saw.
